Algerian Prime Minister Visits Mali to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation and Security Ties

Mohamed.Chouia 14/09/2026 - 11:44 Al-Watan News Algerian-Malian relations are entering a new phase in the path of strengthening bilateral cooperation, under the shared will to push them forward, through reactivating mechanisms that serve the interests of both countries, considering them as key partners in the Sahel region. Relations between Algeria and Mali are of great importance, as their strength is derived from the nature of shared challenges and converging aspirations, based on historical, human, and shared border ties that connect them, making continuous coordination and ongoing dialogue an essential strategic option for both. In this context, the visit of friendship initiated by Prime Minister Sefiou Ghrir today, Monday, to Mali, at the request of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, carries deep implications, reflecting the two countries' commitment to elevate their bilateral relationship to the level of historical ties, through enhancing dialogue and moving forward towards broader horizons. This visit follows the one made by the Prime Minister and President of the Government of the Republic of Mali, Abdoulah Mayga, to Algeria at the end of August, during which he stated that Algeria and Mali "possess a shared history that serves as a starting point for engaging in the path of modernity and progress, in the light of the conviction of their leaderships of the necessity to make the region a space for peace, free from all forms of colonization and hegemony." He also emphasized the importance of recalling the shared history, given that the Algerian and Malian peoples have been involved in common struggles throughout history for liberation and resistance against new colonization and the defense of human dignity and African humanity in general, considering that "the history of the region, whether recent or distant, can serve as a resource for both countries to engage in the path of modernity and progress." He also highlighted the position of President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has always stressed that Algeria "will never interfere in the internal affairs of Mali," reaffirming the commitment to "respecting sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs as essential conditions and pillars of the shared vision of the two countries." Within its efforts to preserve friendship, brotherhood, and good neighborliness, Algeria is working to activate all aspects of bilateral cooperation, starting from its "firm and supportive stance towards Mali, both the people and institutions." President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has, in more than one occasion, reaffirmed Algeria's commitment to its diplomatic efforts to strengthen security coordination with the Malian side, away from all forms of interference in the internal affairs of this neighboring country, embodying the deep-rooted doctrine of Algeria's foreign policy. Security coordination between the two countries also takes on a special dimension due to its close connection with the shared challenges they face, with combating terrorism in all its forms in the Sahel region and countering extremism and transnational organized crime, while looking forward to developing economic and trade relations through creating a suitable environment that allows for the upgrading of border cooperation and development in the continent. Starting from all of this, the two countries, based on constant consultation and communication, are heading towards establishing a balanced and effective strategic partnership that responds to the aspirations of the two peoples and protects their shared interests through the creation and strengthening of cooperation mechanisms in their regional environment.
