Deadly disasters in the Himalayas over a dozen years
Floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods have killed hundreds in Nepal, India, and Pakistan over the past 12 years. The disasters were driven by intense monsoon rains and unstable mountain terrain. The toll has grown as climate change intensifies extreme weather events in the region.
Between 2014 and 2026, Nepal, India, and Pakistan experienced a series of catastrophic floods and landslides. In 2014, the Kosi River overflowed, killing over 100 people in Nepal. In 2018, a glacial lake outburst flood in the Kedarnath region of Uttarakhand, India, claimed more than 100 lives. In 2020, heavy monsoon rains triggered landslides in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan, resulting in over 200 deaths. The 2026 floods, which hit Nepal and India, caused at least 300 fatalities, with many more missing. The disasters have strained local infrastructure and emergency response systems.
