According to Reuters, a large sudden flood occurred on the 26th (local time) in the Himalayan mountainous region where Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China meet. At that time, a 'natural dam' formed in the upper reaches of the river breached on the 28th, raising concerns of a second flood. Authorities in Nepal and China temporarily suspended rescue operations near the border and resumed them on the same day. Forecasts indicate that this weekend could be the worst period for a second flood, as heavy rain is expected in the area until January 1st. According to China Central (CC) TV, a natural dam formed at the confluence point of the Chuzhenkol La River and the Puerpu Changfang River on the 26th, and it breached on the 28th. The two rivers originate in Tibet and flow into Nepal. CCTV reported that 'about 2.5 million cubic meters of water had accumulated in the natural dam, with some overflowing over the embankment.' This is analyzed to be due to about 50,000 cubic meters of ice debris falling into the natural dam from a nearby cliff during a snowfall event in the morning. CNN and others reported that the Nepal police received information from Chinese authorities that the natural dam had collapsed.

According to foreign media citing Nepalese authorities, the number of missing persons caused by the Nepal flood has reached 1,924 as of the third day, reported on the 28th (local time). The number has sharply increased from the initial 977 to around 1,000. According to Reuters, AP, and other news agencies on the 28th (local time), the Nepal disaster authorities stated that the confirmed number of missing persons has increased to 1,924 from the previous 977. The number of deaths has reached 579. Among the missing persons, 517 are foreigners, and a significant number are Indians. On the same day, an Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Singh Jaswal, stated to journalists, '320 Indian citizens are still missing contact.' There are 9 Koreans among the missing. The area where the flood occurred, Lashkar, has a nearby Hindu pilgrimage site and a pilgrimage route to a Hindu site within Tibet, so there are continuous foreign tourists and pilgrims, including Indians. This is also why the number of foreign casualties is high. The Nepalese authorities are currently conducting search and rescue operations independently without foreign support.

Recent floods in Nepal and Tibet followed ICIMOD's warnings about melting glaciers. These reports highlighted doubled ice loss rates and increased flood risks across the region. A catastrophic flash flood triggered by a glacier collapse killed hundreds and left many missing. Smaller glaciers are shrinking faster, intensifying hazards like glacial lake outburst floods. Regional cooperation is vital for understanding and preparing for these cross-border mountain disasters.

A broken glacier in the Himalayas caused a deadly flash flood in Tibet and Nepal on Wednesday. Follow the latest developments.
At least 469 people have died in sudden floods caused by the collapse of ice in Nepal, the police announced on Thursday.
Rescue teams on Friday used heavy machinery to dig through mud and debris in Nepalese towns devastated by a flash flood two days ago, as hopes of finding survivors faded and officials worked to reduce the risk of further catastrophic flooding. The confirmed death toll in Nepal rose to 469 people early on Friday, with almost 1,000 more missing there and in neighbouring Tibet, near where a glacier collapse on Wednesday morning sent a huge torrent of rock, ice, mud and debris cascading through Himalayan mountain river systems. The flood ripped through villages and valleys, destroying power stations, roads and bridges along a route that links Kathmandu with Lhasa in Tibet and is popular with trekkers and pilgrims. Of those missing, at least 540 are foreigners. Authorities in Nepal used helicopters to search for survivors and drop emergency supplies to thousands cut off in towns and valleys while emergency services, some using sniffer dogs, recovered dozens of bodies swept down into the plains. Rescuer help women to move through a muddy road following flash floods and a mudslide in Trishuli, Nuwakot district, Nepal on August 28, 2026. —Reuters Dibga Tamang was among the last people rescued from the hard-hit town of Rasuwa on Thursday, airlifted along with three others to an army camp in Nuwakot. “All of our people have gone. They are dead,” Tamang said. “I have no one left waiting for me. Everything and everyone is gone. The end.” The sheer amount of water and debris stirred up now risks triggering a further disaster. Nepal’s disaster management authority warned that a lake formed by debris blocking the Bhotekoshi River was rising and at risk of bursting, while on the other side of the border China said that some three million cubic metres of water, the equivalent of about 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools, was expected to flow into an already dammed lake over the next three days. There is a high risk the lake could breach, with peak flow expected around September 1, Chinese state media said, citing the water resources ministry. Chinese authorities have mobilised an eight-member engineering team to conduct aerial surveys and 3D modelling of the barrier lake, but accessing it was challenging. “After the glacier collapse created the lake, many isolated cliffs and steep cliffs appeared along it,” one of the engineers, Chen Hanxiao, told CCTV. Chen said the general approach to reducing the lake’s threat is to excavate a drainage channel at a lower point of the dam, but the width and depth of that channel needed calculations based on how fast the water will flow and how quickly the lake will fill. Their next tasks were to monitor the lake and collect data from the lake floor, as well as weather monitoring in the coming days. Torrent tore through border crossing Chinese rescuers had yet to reach the worst-hit area on the Chinese side of the border, the Gyirong border crossing, by Thursday evening, state media reports indicated, as crews worked to clear debris from the key access road leading to the area. Dramatic footage on Wednesday showed enormous torrents of muddy water and debris tearing through structures in the border crossing area within seconds and engulfing people trying to flee. An excavator in action as rescue workers repair a road leading to Gyirong Port after a mudslide, in Gyirong county, Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region, China on August 28, 2026. —Reuters The tally of missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County was 558, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday, including 260 foreign nationals. So far, just three people have been confirmed dead on the Chinese side. China’s Premier Li Qiang arrived at the disaster-stricken site in Gyirong on Thursday afternoon, state-run Xinhua news agency said. The visit suggested Beijing was treating the disaster as a matter of the highest national priority. Buildings ‘wiped out like toothpicks’ Around the world, relatives of those missing were desperate for information about their whereabouts. Sneha Sudhir was one of 10 women whose husbands had set out from Nepal on a trek to Tibet’s Mount Kailash when the region was struck by disaster. The men, all from northern Virginia, are among dozens of Americans missing. “Where are they?” Sudhir said tearfully from her home in Chantilly, Virginia, on Thursday. Sudhir said the women were supporting each other and reaching out to officials, politicians and friends and family in the United States and India, hoping for word. “Everybody is taking turns in shedding their tears, wiping it off and getting back to work,” she said. US President Donald Trump said America had offered support to Nepal. Rescued residents react as they meet family members at an army camp following flash floods, in Battar Bazar town of Nepal’s Nuwakot district on August 28, 2026. —AFP “Nobody’s ever seen anything quite like that, where very powerful, strong, well-built buildings were wiped out like they were toothpicks. It’s a terrible thing. We are sending aid and we’ve spoken to the leadership and we let them know anything they want, they’ll have.” Ganesh Aryal, the administrator of Chitwan district, said authorities had recovered 103 bodies from the river system in his district, which is about 100 kilometres away in the plains from the worst-hit region of Trishuli. With local hospitals unable to accommodate all the bodies, district authorities were setting up tents and making arrangements for families to claim their dead relatives, he said. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who visited flood-hit Nuwakot on Thursday, said the situation was still difficult. “All the state agencies are operating at full capacity. Our first priority now is to save the life of each citizen, search and rescue of the missing, treat the injured and provide immediate relief to the affected families,” he said. The disaster is a major challenge for Shah’s five-month-old government but officials said the country had systems and officials who have experience in handling such tragedies, including the 2015 earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people.

Climate change has been cited as one of the causes of the massive flood that hit the border area between Nepal and China's Tibet. According to reports from Le Monde, The Guardian, and other foreign media on the 27th (local time), geologists and glaciologists have reported that the large-scale landslide caused by the melting of glaciers and permafrost in the high Himalayas is likely to have triggered the flood. Some analyses suggest the possibility that glaciers and rock may have collapsed together. On the 26th, the USGS recorded a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in the area, but later determined that the landslide triggered the seismic signal. The USGS recorded that the landslide caused by glacier collapse reached a magnitude of 5.2. The landslide occurred at a point about 5,180 meters above sea level on the northern slope of Langtang Lirung Mountain in northern Nepal, and massive rocks and debris were pushed into the tributary river Lendecola of the border river Botecoosi in Nepal and Tibet. The water level of the downstream river rose by 7 to 9 meters within 30 minutes.

Analyses suggest that the cause of the large-scale rockslide-induced flood that occurred on the 26th in the Nepal-Tibet Autonomous Region border area, which is part of the Himalayan mountainous region, was not the initially reported earthquake but rather a glacier collapse. The Himalayas, referred to as the 'Roof of the World,' are the largest glacier region in the world excluding Antarctica and Arctic regions, and are strongly affected by climate change. With rising temperatures, glaciers and surrounding snow have been melting, making it highly likely that glacier collapse and subsequent flooding occurred. According to BBC, as of late afternoon on the 27th, at least 362 people were reported dead and 1,384 missing in Nepal and China combined. Additionally, according to Reuters and Nepal's Kathmandu Post, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) announced that a large-scale collapse of glacier and rock occurred in a high mountain area about 20 km northeast of the Rasuwa-Gadhi border checkpoint, based on satellite image analysis. The USGS, after re-analyzing the initially reported energy signal of a 4.4 magnitude earthquake, concluded that in reality, it was a glacier and rock collapse.

A huge piece of ice that fell thousands of metres from a glacier into a river below may have unleashed the disaster in Nepal and Tibet that killed at least 180 people. Here is what experts believe happened so far: Glacier collapse A glacier collapse in Nepal’s mountains near Tibet appears to have triggered the disaster. “A large chunk of glacier fell from about 5,200 metres… into a valley,” said Simon Cox, principal scientist at New Zealand’s GNS Science. It “transformed into this raging mass of debris… where it picks up rocks and sediment and trees and anything in the way and fires it on down through the canyon,” he told AFP. The wall of water first impacted a border post, as documented in terrifying CCTV footage showing mud and debris engulfing the area as people fled before it. It then travelled downstream into Nepal, flooding villages and bringing down bridges and buildings. Seismic activity The glacier collapse was large enough to register as a seismic event, initially mistaken for an earthquake. But after further analysis, the US Geological Survey determined “that the seismic event was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow, and that no earthquake had occurred”. The collapse registered as a 5.2-magnitude “seismic event”, which took place at 8:37am local time (7:52am PKT). Estimating just how much of the glacier collapsed will take time, Cox said, but it could range from “half a million cubic metres to tens of million cubic metres”. An aerial view shows houses lying deluged in sludge after flash floods at Devighat, Bidur Municipality in Nepal’s Nuwakot district on August 27, 2026. —AFP Detective work With the affected area largely inaccessible, experts are using satellite imagery and any available measurements on the ground to reconstruct the disaster. “We can look at satellite imagery taken before and after the event, and try and see what has changed, essentially looking for what is missing from the mountains in the ‘after’ imagery,” said Lauren Vargo, a glaciologist at New Zealand’s Victoria University of Wellington. Soon after the seismic activity was recorded, a nearby water monitoring station stopped transmitting, Nepali authorities said. Stations downstream began going offline one by one, though water was registered reaching up to 12.3 metres high in Kalikhola, near the Tibet border at 2:14pm, they added. Local residents walk along a street lying deluged in sludge after flash floods near Devighat, Bidur Municipality in Nepal’s Nuwakot district on August 27, 2026. — AFP Glofs Early speculation suggested a glacial lake outburst flood, or Glof, a growing risk as glaciers melt due to climate change. A Glof occurs when a fragile debris wall holding back a lake of glacier melt suddenly collapses, unleashing the water behind it. Some experts suggested a Glof might have been involved. “Water does flow within glaciers and flows beneath glaciers,” said Adrian McCallum, a glaciologist at the University of the Sunshine Coast. “But to my mind, the only reason why a large volume of water should all of a sudden flow down a valley is because it has been released,” he told AFP. Volunteers use bulldozers to clear mud and debris along a road after flash floods at Trishuli in Nepal’s Nuwakot district on August 27, 2026. —AFP Other experts said they did not detect existing glacial lakes near the site of the glacier collapse, and theorised that water collected under the glacier might have cascaded down with the falling chunk. The falling glacier ice could also have briefly dammed the river, collecting water behind it that was released when it dislodged. Summer glacier melt upstream and monsoon rains would mean the rivers were already high, and the volume of water was also swelled by debris and mud picked up as it travelled kilometres from the initial collapse, added Cox. Warnings Nepali authorities first received word of a flood around 9:00am local time, and began alerting areas along the Bhote Khoshi river to “stay on high alert and stay in safe areas”. But it is unclear how many people received the warning, or how much time they would have had to respond. “The reality is, if you are in a community underneath a large glacier and potentially a glacier lake where a Glof could occur, then to some extent, it’s a ticking time bomb,” said McCallum. Women walk past a house bearing sludge marks that show the water level after flash floods near Devighat, Bidur Municipality in Nepal’s Nuwakot district on Aug 27, 2026. — AFP And even for those receiving a warning, options would be limited, said Hatim Sharif, a hydrologist at the University of Texas San Antonio. “Running will not help,” nor will trying to flee by vehicle, he told AFP, because the mud and water moving at high speed form a lethal combination “like liquid concrete.” The only solution is to climb up a hill, at least 20 feet (six metres), he estimated. Climate change While it is hard to immediately attribute any individual glacial event to climate change, the warming planet is a constant background stress on these ancient ice rivers, experts say. Glaciers are retreating globally, creating disaster risks but also depriving downstream communities of vital water sources. “The biggest way to mitigate the risk would be to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to limit warming,” said Vargo. A Swedish citizen is among the over 1,000 people missing after the dramatic landslide in the Himalayas, according to Nepal's tourism authority.
Kathmandu - 'It is the worst disaster in the country's history. It was terrible. A flood coming from the mountain, and directed with violence towards the valley, swept everything away: people, houses, bridges, structures. Villages, markets and roads were swept away. It is a serious wound for the nation': this is what Father Silas Bogati, the Apostolic Administrator of the Nepal Vicariate, told Fides Agency, the day after the floods that affected the border between Nepal and Tibet yesterday, August 26. The devastating water masses were caused by a 'glacial collapse', with the collapse of ice and rocks in the Himalayas. The material temporarily blocked the Bhote Koshi river, forming a natural dam that then gave way, causing a violent wave of mud, water and debris towards the valley, which crossed the Nepalese districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot and reached even lower areas, such as Chitwan. On the Chinese side, the wave hit the Gyirong county in Tibet, including the area of the Gyirong Port border. As experts clarified, the initial seismic signal was not attributable to an earthquake, but was generated by the glacial collapse and the subsequent debris flow. 'We are stunned. We pray for all the missing and the deceased. My heart is close to those who suffer because of this catastrophe. We have about 25 Catholic families in the disaster area; they seem to be safe, but we are very worried about them. We entrust them to God, we pray for their safety and will do everything to help them,' adds the responsible person of the small local Catholic community. Furthermore, he says, 'a priest from the Vicariate, Father James Britto, had gone to celebrate Mass from the other side of the river and was blocked: the bridge was swept away.' According to official data, the initial toll is 165 confirmed deaths in Nepal and 3 in Tibet, but Nepalese authorities expect an increase with the continuation of the search. The missing are almost 1,500 between Nepal and Tibet, of which almost 800 are foreigners. The Apostolic Administrator notes: 'There are Nepalese, but also foreigners and tourists who were in these places for a hike: it is a pilgrimage route towards Mansarovar, a sacred Hindu place that is also a hiking trail for hikers and trekkers.' 'The government - informs the priest - has put the rescue machine into motion, declared an emergency, offers free medical care and has started to transfer the people who are still blocked to safe places. It is the second time such a disaster occurs in that area, but this time it is of enormous proportions,' he observes. P. Bogati also reports that 'even Caritas, our small organization, will get involved and launch a call to partners around the world; we will do our part,' he assures. Catholic Relief Services, a US-based Catholic organization, has already activated to provide aid, including essential goods and hygiene services. Other aid organizations linked to Protestant churches have started a first humanitarian intervention, distributing food packages, first aid kits and tents in the affected areas. The Catholic community in Nepal counts almost 9,400 faithful, with 13 parishes, four of which in the capital Kathmandu and nine in the rest of Nepal, is engaged in the educational, social and pastoral mission throughout the country.

Rescue teams rushed Thursday to find more than 1,000 people missing on the Nepal-Tibet border in flash floods and landslides that killed at least 165 and swept away entire villages. A terrifying clip of surveillance video from the Chinese side of the frontier shows a massive wall of mud and debris crashing over a building several stories high on Wednesday morning, engulfing it as dozens of people ran for their lives below. The surge swept away buses and cars like they were toys. Many of the missing are foreign tourists, officials said of the disaster, which the US Geological Survey believes was caused by a glacial collapse that sent a flow of debris engulfing areas along the way. The tsunami-like rumble of water and mud struck villages and towns on the path of two rivers — Bhote Koshi and Trishuli, with Nepali police saying they had recovered 162 bodies. Across the border, Chinese state media said the “mudslide disaster” at the Gyirong Port in Tibet claimed three lives while 558 people, including 260 foreigners, were still missing. Raju Bhadel, 56, a businessman in Nepal’s Nuwakot district, recounted receiving a call from his brother-in-law in distress. “They were crying and said their entire house had been swept away. Three family members were rescued, but his brother is still missing,” he said. Also at Nuwakot, teacher Manok Mishra witnessed “nine trucks being swept away by the floods including people”. This frame grab taken from video released by the Armed Police Force of Nepal on August 26, 2026 shows rescue workers carrying a person after massive floods and landslides in Rasuwa. —AFP ‘Inland tsunami’ Rescuers waded through mud and sludge to look for survivors after floodwaters buried the lower floors of multi-storey buildings. Some 468 tourists — 393 of them foreigners — were unaccounted for a day after the disaster struck, according to Nepal’s tourism ministry. Nepal did not provide a figure for residents in affected areas who are still missing. On China’s end, rescuers were seeking 558 missing, including 260 foreign nationals, according to local officials quoted by state broadcaster CCTV. The foreigners out of contact included Indians, and others from Australia, Britain, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea and the United States, Nepal’s tourism board said. The rush of mud and debris was “like an inland tsunami, travelling nearly 170 kilometres down the Bhote Koshi valley into Central Nepal”, said environmental historian Ruth Gamble of La Trobe University. “It is a popular route for international tourists travelling from Kathmandu to Lhasa,” she added. “Entire villages and market areas have been wiped out,” said David Fisher, the Nepal head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). It said it was dispatching emergency supplies including blankets, first aid kits, stretchers and body bags. Tibet government officials mobilised nearly 800 emergency workers and 150 vehicles as well as sniffer dogs and speed boats to help the rescue efforts, China’s state-run news agency Xinhua said. Glacial collapse The cause of the disaster was not immediately clear in the hours after it occurred early on Wednesday, but the US Geological Survey said it was a glacial collapse that caused seismic activity and the “catastrophic” downstream impacts in Nepal and Tibet. “This event was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake,” it said. “Additional analysis of nearby seismic stations, long period seismic waves, and satellite imagery led to the determination that the seismic event was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow, and that no earthquake had occurred.” Climate change is causing glaciers to melt worldwide, increasing the risks of glacial lake floods and glacial collapses. Residents look at a street submerged by mud following flash floods and a landslide disaster in Devighat, in Nepal’s Nuwakot district on August 26, 2026. —AFP Experts cautioned that a lingering blockage in a river could produce an additional flood. Images shared by Nepali police showed floodwater surging through a river, sweeping away houses in its path, while AFP images depicted the top floor of a house sticking out from muddy soil. Rasuwa, in the north of Nepal, was the first district to be affected. But deaths have been reported from seven Nepali districts in total as the flood waters raged downstream, all the way to Chitwan in the south, on the border with India. Many trekking companies were not running tours during the monsoon season, but there remain significant numbers of travellers including pilgrims in the region. Among sites hit by the flood was Syabrubesi, the gateway to the popular trekking areas, as well as by pilgrims travelling to the base of the Mount Kailash, a holy site for Buddhists and Hindus. The Nepali Army was carrying out flights and had rescued scores of people, while others living near the river in danger zones had been told to relocate. China’s leader Xi Jinping said that “the most urgent task is doing everything possible to search for and rescue the missing people”, according to CCTV. Traffic authorities in Tibet’s Shigatse said roads in the area were “at risk of mudslides and unsafe for passage”. Qianggong Zhang, head of climate and environmental risks at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), warned of the potential for a second flood. “With a blockage still lodged upstream on the Nepal-China border river, authorities warn a second flood may occur,” he told AFP.

Nepali police said in an operational update on Wednesday they had recovered 157 bodies after a terrifying flood tore through the Tibet border region, taking the overall death toll to at least 160, with several hundred missing. Hundreds of tourists were still out of contact hours after the disaster hit. A torrent of mud and debris burst from the banks of a river between China and Nepal, burying buildings and triggering a frantic search for survivors. Chinese authorities said three people died and 265 others were missing after the mudslide, state media reported, citing preliminary figures from local officials. It added that President Xi Jinping ordered an “all-out” rescue effort. It was not immediately clear if there was any overlap between the Chinese figures and those announced by the Nepalese, with state broadcaster CCTV saying specific casualty figures were still being verified. “I got a call from [my brother-in-law] this morning, and they were crying and said their entire house had been swept away. Three family members were rescued, but his brother is still missing,” said 56-year-old Raju Bhadel. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah urged the Himalayan nation to stand united after the devastating flood. “The pain and loss you have suffered is not small. But I want to assure you that you are not alone in this difficult time — the state is with you with all its means and resources,” Shah said in a statement posted to social media. “Please be patient. The government takes full responsibility for your rescue, treatment, food and shelter. In times of such a disaster, we all need to stand together.” Some 403 tourists — 341 of them foreigners — were unaccounted for several hours after the disaster struck, according to the ministry of culture, tourism and civil aviation. Nepal’s tourism board said Americans, Indians, an Australian, Malaysians and Britons were among those unaccounted for. Images shared by Nepali police showed floodwater surging through a river, sweeping away houses in its path, while AFP images depicted the top floor of a house sticking out from muddy soil. A police spokesman told AFP earlier that authorities did not know the extent of the damage but said they had “alerted people who are staying near the riverside to relocate”. The Nepal Army said it had deployed helicopters and disaster response personnel to the affected area. The Nepal Electricity Authority said about 430 megawatts of production capacity, including from hydropower and solar facilities, has been damaged. “The disaster has damaged the production, transmission and distribution facilities of the Authority… resulting in disruption of electricity supply,” it said. Sarthak Shrestha, a remote sensing and geo-information analyst at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), said a preliminary assessment showed “no anomalies” from China’s side of the border. “We believe a rock-ice avalanche occurred in Nepal, blocking the Lhende river and causing the cascading flood event,” he told AFP. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief and offered his sympathies to the flood-affected people. “Deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives and widespread devastation caused by the floods and landslides in Nepal’s Rasuwa District and other affected areas,” he said in a post on X. “My heartfelt sympathies are with the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragedy. Pakistan stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Nepal during this difficult time,” he said, while praying for the safety and well-being of all those in the affected areas. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also extended condolences. “Deeply distressed by the loss of precious lives and widespread damage caused by the flash floods in Nepal. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, wish the injured a speedy recovery, and pray for the safe return of those still missing,” he said in an X post. “Pakistan stands firmly with the Government and people of Nepal in this difficult hour and remains ready to extend all possible assistance.” Mudslide risk Several highways were also closed, Nepali authorities said. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported on Wednesday that “a mudslide disaster on the Nepalese side resulted in major casualties and missing people at the Gyirong Port” in Tibet. Footage shared by the broadcaster, which AFP was unable to immediately verify, showed rushing water carrying tree branches and debris, as well as a flooded road. China’s leader said that “the most urgent task is doing everything possible to search for and rescue the missing people… quickly treat injured people and minimise casualties to the greatest extent possible”, according to CCTV. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken to Shah, and gave both his condolences and an offer to aid rescue efforts. “The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time,” Modi said in a statement. “India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal. Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts.” Traffic authorities in Tibet’s Shigatse said roads in the area were “at risk of mudslides and unsafe for passage” in a post on social media on Wednesday. In July last year, 17 people went missing after a mudslide near the Gyirong Port, Xinhua reported at the time. Monsoon rains from June to September regularly trigger deadly floods and landslides across South Asia. Scientists say climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in the region. Qianggong Zhang, head of climate and environmental risks at ICIMOD, said a second flood may be imminent. “With a blockage still lodged upstream on the Nepal-China border river, authorities warn a second flood may occur,” he told AFP.
