The Houthis, however, denied targeting Mecca, saying their attacks were aimed at Saudi oil infrastructure and military bases. Meanwhile, the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) say that escalating conflict in Yemen has displaced more than 100,000 people within the country, while thousands of others have fled to Djibouti to escape the violence. A UN spokesperson said the escalation of fighting, particularly along Yemen’s western coast, has led to increased displacement. Stéphane Dujarric said: “The U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is warning that rapidly escalating hostilities, especially on the western coast of Yemen, have displaced more than 100,000 human beings inside the country and forced thousands more to seek safety across the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in Djibouti. And as you can imagine, the dangers of that crossing. Many families had to flee on short notice with very few belongings. We and our humanitarian partners continue to support displaced families and others caught up in the hostilities in the affected areas.” Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration says around 4.5 million people have been displaced as a result of the conflict in Yemen since 2015. Abdulsattar Essoyev, head of the IOM office in Yemen, said: "So it's 4.5 million people that have been displaced already from the previous conflicts since 2015. And this additional number of people displaced is putting more burden on the existing structure, resources and availability of any support that is either from the government side or from the humanitarian agencies or the partners on the ground." The United Nations has expressed concern over the rising number of civilian casualties and called for the protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian law. The UN has also allocated $9 million in emergency assistance for displaced families and host communities and urged the parties to the conflict to ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid.
