US and Iran Sign MOU as 80 Mines Remain in Hormuz, Blocking Key Maritime Route

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint, is blocked by approximately 80 mines, according to the independent tanker owner trade body. The center of the strait remains closed for 'some time,' forcing vessels to take the Omani route, where the risk of running aground is higher. On June 18, 25 commercial vessels passed through the strait, the highest daily figure since April 18, indicating a partial resumption of traffic. The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday, which allowed some vessels to exit the Gulf through the strait. The tanker association has stated that normal shipping will not resume until the mines are cleared.
