US Judge Dismisses Elon Musk’s xAI Trade Secret Lawsuit Against OpenAI

A federal judge in San Francisco dismissed a lawsuit by Elon Musk’s xAI against OpenAI, ruling that xAI failed to prove OpenAI induced a former engineer to disclose confidential information. The case, which had been filed in September, was dismissed with prejudice, ending the legal action against OpenAI.

The lawsuit, brought by xAI, accused OpenAI of misappropriating trade secrets related to the Grok chatbot. US District Judge Rita Lin ruled that xAI did not provide sufficient evidence that OpenAI engineers knew or encouraged the former xAI engineer Xuechen Li to share confidential information. The dismissal with prejudice means xAI cannot refile the case.
