North Korea-Russia Strategic Alignment

The strategic alignment began in September 2023 when Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un met in North Korea. Kim pledged full support for Russia's military actions. In exchange, Putin promised to provide space technology to North Korea. This meeting established a foundation for bilateral cooperation. By April 2026, the alliance escalated into long-term military cooperation. Kim Jong Un publicly endorsed the war in Ukraine as a 'sacred' conflict. Both nations began commemorating North Korean troops killed in the war. This period marked a transition from diplomatic support to active military integration. Diplomatic engagement intensified throughout mid-2026. North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui conducted high-level visits to Moscow to meet with Sergey Lavrov and Vladimir Putin. These talks focused on implementing decisions from previous summits. The leaders reaffirmed a commitment to a comprehensive strategic partnership and expressed gratitude for military assistance. Economic and infrastructural ties also expanded during this period. Russia and North Korea increased exchanges in scientific, educational, and economic fields. Russian tourism to North Korea grew significantly by the end of 2025. These developments solidified the political and social links between the two states. As of August 2026, the partnership has reached a physical milestone. Construction of a cross-border bridge over the Tumen River is complete. The bridge includes customs facilities and freight roads on both sides. Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin are expected to attend the upcoming opening ceremony in Vladivostok.
